Police said Sherri K. Vaughn, 21, was driving east on Canal Road at about 9:55 a.m. when she lost control of her car on the snow-covered road and slid into the path of a minivan driven by Martin C. Kimball, 51, of Bouckville.

Police said Kimball unsuccessfully tried to avoid Vaughn's car by driving off the shoulder of the road.

Vaughn was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, while Kimball was treated for a knee injury.

Police said an investigation into the crash is continuing, with assistance from the Madison County Sheriff's Department's accident reconstruction team, but no charges are pending.

Emergency service agencies elsewhere throughout the area reported a host of minor accidents as up to 9 inches of snow blanketed the area Saturday, WKTV meteorologist Matt Lanza said. City officials in Utica declared a snow emergency Saturday afternoon, banning all parking on city streets after 10 p.m.

While the snow was expected to taper off Saturday night as a cold front moved through the area, Lanza said lake-effect snowfall could make an appearance this afternoon, especially in areas south and west of Utica. Lanza said he was uncertain of how much snow could fall as a result.

Meanwhile, today's temperatures are expected to head back into the freezer, with daytime highs only reaching the mid-teens, and overnight lows dropping into single digits.

Snow showers will continue into the week, with temperatures gradually climbing until they reach the low 30s Wednesday and Thursday.
